Just for fun, I dragged my Time Machine icon from the dock - poof -
gone.
I then was able to just drag the Time Machine icon from the
Applications folder onto the dock. Harmony restored.

Good lord, people, have I been speaking in tongues all this while, or
is there some kind of Internet word-scrambling voodoo at work here?
Once more: when Time Machine is opened, the Dock disappears. It always
has. The usual Desktop, with its volume icons along one edge and the
Dock along another gives way to Apple's patented deep-space image in
which an ostensibly infinite succession of root-level hard-drive
windows recede into infinity.
