Ubuntu GNU/Linux 4.10 on 5 GB partition eMail app(s): Microsoft Entourage Web-browser used for GMail, Hotmail, Yahoo mail Browser(s) in OS X: Safari (Primary), latest version Camino (Secondary), latest version (updated weekly with CaminoKnight) Secondary Mac: PowerMacintosh G3/266 (Beige, "Rev B"), 128 MB RAM, 80 GB + 4 GB OS used: YellowDogLinux GNU/Linux 3.0.1 Boot OS used to launch YDL 3.0.1 on "OldWorld" (i.e. pre-iMac) Beige G3: Mac OS 9.2.2 Under YDL and Ubuntu: 1. I only use FireFox 0.9.3 as the web browser; 2. GNOME is my preferred X-windows manager (no choice in Ubuntu). PS It's becoming REALLY easy to install and USE GNU/Linux on the Mac. I already had my PowerBook G3's HD partitioned as 5.1 GB and 13.6 GB (when I set up the HD one year ago I planned to install another OS sometime in the future so I partitioned the drive). All I did was burn the Ubuntu .iso disk image to disk, backed-up my 20 GB drive to the Beige G3 server (that took a _long_ time), inserted the CD, rebooted and held down the C key. Then the installer took over and only asked me a few questions (I accepted all the defaults). "Destroying" the 5 GB partition was easy as pie (all you need to do is RTFS (read the friggin screen) and even a Mac user could install the OS) and the installer even automagically connected to my wireless network (& downloaded 40 MB of files from the web... you need an ethernet/wireless web connection to install). I still have my OS X partition and now I have a GNU/Linux OS with which I can experiment (on a laptop nonetheless :). The same thing applies to YDL. The difference to novices between YDL and Ubuntu (the only two distros with which I have experience) is that YDL is of the kitchen-sink philosphy and Ubuntu is designed around a minimalist philosophy (3 CDs vs 1 CD). Ubuntu is Debian-based (and is the cutting edge of Debian (a major variant of GNU/Linux)) whilst YDL is Fedora-based (formerly RedHat; another major variant of GNU/Linux), nowhere near cutting edge (though, will have fewer bugs) and has been around a lot longer than Ubuntu (6 years vs. 1 month). <http://www.ubuntulinux.org/> <http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/> <http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=8407> Eric. _________________________________________________ For information concerning the MUGLO List just click on http://muglo.on.ca/Pages/joinus.html Our Archives can be viewed at //www.freelists.org/archives/muglo Don't forget to periodically check our web site at: http://muglo.on.ca/
