No Beth....you need to name a sheet Sam  (double click on the sheet tab
that says Sheet 1 and type Sam)

Then put something into cell A1 on the Sam sheet in the Joe file and
that same thing should show up in the Bob file

I'm back - when I tried your formula Linda I did see the formula active
in 
Joe and Bob because they are two separate workbooks -  but I ended up
getting 
the number "0" (zero)  in the cell B1 -  but I'm lost on Sam - if Sam is
the 
second sheet in the Joe file I didn't see it
