[mso] Re: cannot find file error in Excel (looking for component?)

I'm running Windows 98SE & Office 2000. I can check the other
computers (where the CD Excel files open just fine from Windows
Explorer) in the lab (tomorrow) to see what the registry looks
like. (That pain instead of pane must've been a freudian (well
not exactly freudian) slip.) If they look different, how do I
go about changing the registry so my computer looks the same as
the others' registry?

Ok...mine looks way different than that but I'm running Windows
XP and
Office XP and this could be why....let us know what version of
Windows
and Office you are running and someone else in here can see if
there's
says the same thing

See....this IS a Windows problem.....if it was an Excel problem,
Excel
would not be able to open these files.....but since Excel CAN
open them
and Windows CAN'T, I'm betting dollars to donuts that your Excel
extensions in windows are hosed.

One thing you can try, while you are waiting to see if anyone
can tell
you what their registry says.....find an Excel file in Windows
Explorer.
Click on it once just to select it. Then hold your shift key
down and
RIGHT click on it and choose "Open With".....scroll down thru
the list
and select Excel....I know it's already selected, but let's see
if this
re-applies Excel to these files in Windows.....put a check in
the box at
the bottom that says "always use this problem to open files of
this
type" and click on OK and see what happens. If Excel opens,
then close
it and double click on another file and see if that works. Then
try one
on the CD.

Or.....if none of this does any good....go into Windows Explorer
and go
to the View menu and choose Folder Options (might be in the
Tools menu
depending on what version of Windows you have)...click on the
file types
tab and scroll down and find your Microsoft Excel Worksheet
files.....click on the Edit tab and then highlight the Open
command and
click on Edit and tell us what it says in there....this is way
different
in Windows XP so I can't remember what it's supposed to say but
I know
it should show you a path to Excel and have a % sign in
there...but if
you tell us what's in there, someone with the same version of
Excel and
Windows can tell you what's in theres and you can change it.

This is about all I can do, since I'm in the world of Windows XP
here
now and it's totally different

Actually....you could just check all this info against one of
the
machines at work where this is working and make sure yours looks
exactly
the same as theirs.

Good luck.....otherwise tell your system admin at work to fix
this for
you....that's what they get paid for....this is DEFINITELY a
Windows
issue, I assure you.

Linda

In the right pain, I see (when doubling clicking on the .xls
folder in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT) I didn't change a thing, just
looked.

Name Data
(default) "Excel.Sheet.8"
Content Type "application/x-msexcel"

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe this is a registry error....go
to this
registry key and tell me exactly what you see in the right pane
when you
doubleclick on the .xls folder:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.xls

DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING...just tell me what's there...however, I'm
heading
off to teach a class tonite, so I won't be able to reply to this
til a
lot later.....maybe someone else has a clue tho

And, no, sorry, there is no way to reply from the freelists web
page...you have to copy/paste the way you have been doing

Linda

Thanks for replying, Linda. From the CD, Access files, Word
files & PowerPoint files open just fine. The Excel files don't,
so I tend to think it's an Excel issue versus a CD drive or disk
issue. Copying the Excel files to the hard drive and opening
from the hard drive using Windows Explorer also brings up the
error message. The CD drive I'm using is the E: drive. (Again,
opening Excel first lets me open the files on the CD - I prefer
to open from Windows Explorer, if possible, and that way worked
just fine before yesterday.)

When trying to open Excel files from Windows Explorer via CD or
hard drive, the Excel program opens, then the error message
presents itself.

PS Is there a way to reply via the freelists.org site? I don't
see a way, hence I'm copying info and pasting into a new email
message.
