When you talk about tab stop symbols that look like triangles or squares, are you referring to the symbols on the ruler? If so, then they are not tab stops. The tab stop symbols look like an L (left align tab), an upside-down T (centre tab), an upside-down T with a dot (decimal tab), and a backwards L (right align tab). The two triangles at the left are the paragraph left indents. The top one is for the first line, and the lower one is for subsequent lines. The little square under the lower triangle is a handle that lets you move both of them at once. The single triangle at the right is the paragraph right indent. When you are in a table, each column will have its own set of indent triangles. In 2003, it looks as though the decimal tab will align on colons as well as on decimal points. You choose which type of tab will be inserted when you click on the ruler by clicking on the little box to the left of the ruler.
