Okay, so here are the new headers. If this stuff bores you all, let me know. I'm illustrating these things because, in the background, Outlook is expected to sort it all out on its own and, well, obviously it's not as concerned about some pieces of data as it is others. Time and Subject seem to be its real concerns. Anyway, here're the headers for that last message which we'll compare to the originals: Received: from turing.freelists.org [206.53.239.180] by mail.neospire.net with ESMTP (SMTPD32-5.05) id A40117E70202; Sun, 26 Oct 2003 12:35:45 -0600 Received: from turing (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with ESMTP id 9D074390A8B; Sun, 26 Oct 2003 13:27:05 -0500 (EST) Received: with ECARTIS (v1.0.0; list mso); Sun, 26 Oct 2003 13:26:59 -0500 (EST) X-Original-To: mso@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Delivered-To: mso@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Received: from smtp.neospire.net (smtp.neospire.net [66.111.111.26]) by turing.freelists.org (Avenir Technologies Mail Multiplex) with SMTP id 7705D390A61 for <mso@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>; Sun, 26 Oct 2003 13:26:58 -0500 (EST) Received: (qmail 6606 invoked from network); 26 Oct 2003 18:35:34 -0000 Received: from unknown (HELO chappieslappie) (66.87.127.146) by smtp with SMTP; 26 Oct 2003 18:35:34 -0000 From: "Greg Chapman" <greg@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> To: <mso@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Subject: [mso] Re: OT Lisa Date: Sun, 26 Oct 2003 12:30:18 -0600 Message-ID: <007001c39bef$38d5ca90$9700a8c0@chappieslappie> In-Reply-To: <20031026182107.916D4643AE@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Importance: Normal X-archive-position: 996 X-UIDL: 10980 > In-Reply-To: <NFBBKANLILKKPHKLHBACOEABCMAA.1z@xxxxxxxxxxxxxx> > Thread-Index: AcOb69M7jcwPofalTnaCSvd+wU1GjQAAeO7A > X-archive-position: 990 > X-original-sender: linda@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx > Reply-To: mso@xxxxxxxxxxxxx > X-list: mso > X-UIDL: 10973 Note the Global and then Thread Specific pieces of data in both header sets. The global for the list appears to be found in the X-UIDL header and the Specific Thread can be seen in the X-archive-position header field. I don't see the Thread Index in my reply but I may again in any replies to this message. Also note a couple other tidbits of info. First note the message ID is generated and passed along by the originating SMTP MTA (chappieslappie in this case) and then watch how the RECEIVED FROM lines (bottom most to top is the order of delivery) time stamps work. My laptop is configured for the Central time zone and is currently -0500 behind GMT. My upstream ISP sets there server to GMT directly, therefore it shows its offset at -0000. Watch how the time zones and offset data are used so that merely tracking precedence based on time and a common reference point can be achieved. In all, this message took less than 10 seconds to deliver. And also note that my system was 4.5 minutes slow but that my ISP's server is another 9 minutes slower. The server at freelists didn't change th original time stamp at all (which is correct by the RFC's. So, if the time sequence is off, start by correcting the time on your own PC. Then send a piece of email to yourself and see what the time stamp in the headers says. If it's off at the ISP's server, it will show up and you'll have an indication of how it is that your messages are showing up out of sync. That also explains why Turing.freelists.org is using eXtended headers in order to track messages in a thread; it knows that the time stamp is not to be trusted!!
