In your merge document in Word, the one that shows the field names, like
<first name>, <last name>, etc. hold down your Alt key and press F9...this
will display the field codes...find the one for your zip code (in Ray's
original example he sent you here, he was assuming it's name is zip so the
field code would say {mergefield zip}. All you need to do is change that to
{mergefield zip \# "00000"}

Then press Alt F9 again to turn the field codes off.

Ray,

Bare with me but I am not having an easy time of this. I just do not
understand this jargon. Below is a copy of the solution to my problem but I

am still lost:
Having manually applied the format you want, view the field codes (either
from the right-click menu, or ALT+F9). Then change the field from
{MERGEFIELD Name} (or whatever) to {MERGEFIELD Name \* MERGEFORMAT}. Then
flip back to viewing results and update the field.

Right click on what? To change the field shouldn't the field be clearly
identifiable? How does one flip back to viewing results? How does one
update the field?
