Well...THAT sucks, eh? I use these interactive spreadsheets a lot in my
online Excel classes...so I guess I need to find an alternative way of doing
this, if Microsoft is just going to abandon us once AGAIN. grrrr

Precisely my point. Office 2003 installs no such key so it won't be
present in the local system's registry without modification and you'll get
the red X, the functional eqivalent of the old 429 error, Object could not
be found.
