OK...but did you ALSO remove all your TEMP files? Even if you're not on a network, you can STILL get the error message IF you have crashed versions of the original file somewhere on your hard drive. So to make SURE you have all the crashed files removed...try this: * Close all your applications and restart your system. This will make sure no currently used TEMP files are in the system and will force out any that are not being used, but may be still in memory. * When you come back into the system, hit Start/Find/Files and Folders and in the search input box type: ~*.* and hit enter. MAKE SURE you put that tilde in as the first character!!! If you just told your system to search for *.*, you'd be telling it to search for EVERYTHING on your computer! That's obviously NOT what you want! But since all temp/crashed files start with a TILDE ( ~ )...you'll want to search for all files beginning with that character. * When the system has stopped searching and has found all the ~*.* files (all files beginning with a tilde), you can hit Ctrl/A in the Find dialog and delete all those files. These are all crashes/temp files that were created at one point on your system and were not properly removed when whatever program finished using them. Most should be in your TEMP directory, but since Word also puts working files in the current default directory, you'll probably find some that are located in your MyDocuments and other default folders where you work/store word files. Chances are that you'll see some files that have dimmed Word icons next to them and start with something like ~$mydoc.tmp or ~$mydoc.dot or ~$mydoc.doc. These will be crashed Word files. You'll want to get rid of all the crashed/temp files on your system since they just take up room and can eat up your resources, but you'll be particularly interested in these copies of the Word files. If doing this STILL doesn't help, don't give up yet and let us know. There can be other issues, but locked files on a network and/or on your system is the most common reason why this happens, so let's make sure both of these issues are covered before we have you jumping through too many unnecessary hoops! Whatever you do...DON'T waste time uninstalling/reinstalling Word. That rarely ever solved the problem on it's own and is usually just a waste of time! Good luck and let us know how it goes. By the way...what version are you using or did you already tell me that? The story behind this problem is, I updated the PC from Windows 98 to Windows 2000. I copied the files across, and ever since that it has being giving me the error. If I go into MSword and create a new document, (with the PC still off the network), Save it, it is still giving me the same error. Its a strange one! =20 Any help would be appreciated! If you are getting this error, it means one of two things: 1) you are on a shared network/folder and someone else is currently using the file. Newer versions of Word will tell you WHO is "apparently" using the file. If you get a message that say, Jane Doe is using the file, go tell Jane to close the file cos' you need it. Maybe she is really using it...maybe she forgot and left it open...maybe she crashed the file on her system and the app THINKS she still has it open. 2) which brings us to our second reason...if you have a file open and it crashes, the program can THINK it's still open and thereby give you this message. If you get a message saying YOU are the current user, you can be sure the file is crashed. In that case...close all your programs/files, go to your TEMP directory and clear out all the file. Then search and destroy all ~*.tmp files on your hard drive to remove old crashed files that got caught in the system. Reboot and this should fix the problem. Here's an article you should read to help you clear out your system: www.mousetrax.com/maintain.html. Note that if the file is really being used by someone else, you will get this message because you can't be working on the same file when someone else has it open making edits. Also note that Word XP solves this issue by allow multiple users to edit the same file (with warnings) and then merges all the changes in the same file. Good luck! I am having a problem with Word Excel Documents. When I open an Excel or Word Document I get the following message,=3D20 <filename> is being used by <username>. Do you want to make a copy? If I press cancel, it works away perfectly, but if I press OK, the file changes to Read-Only. All the files are in a shared directory. Even if I create a new document I get the same message. Can anyone help me?? I tried Microsoft's Technet , but it does not give me a solution.
