First of all, Shane, when you post a question, you should always be sure
to add a little reference to what the question is about...in the
subject...so we'll know what's up and can follow the threads, if
necessary.

If you are getting this error, it means one of two things:

1) you are on a shared network/folder and someone else is currently
using the file. Newer versions of Word will tell you WHO is "apparently"
using the file. If you get a message that say, Jane Doe is using the
file, go tell Jane to close the file cos' you need it. Maybe she is
really using it...maybe she forgot and left it open...maybe she crashed
the file on her system and the app THINKS she still has it open.

2) which brings us to our second reason...if you have a file open and it
crashes, the program can THINK it's still open and thereby give you this
message. If you get a message saying YOU are the current user, you can
be sure the file is crashed. In that case...close all your
programs/files, go to your TEMP directory and clear out all the file.
Then search and destroy all ~*.tmp files on your hard drive to remove
old crashed files that got caught in the system. Reboot and this should
fix the problem. Here's an article you should read to help you clear out
your system: www.mousetrax.com/maintain.html.

Note that if the file is really being used by someone else, you will get
this message because you can't be working on the same file when someone
else has it open making edits. Also note that Word XP solves this issue
by allow multiple users to edit the same file (with warnings) and then
merges all the changes in the same file.

Good luck!

Hi!

I am having a problem with Word Excel Documents. When I open an Excel
or Word Document I get the following message,=20

<filename> is being used by <username>. Do you want to make a copy?

If I press cancel, it works away perfectly, but if I press OK, the file
changes to Read-Only. All the files are in a shared directory. Even if
I create a new document I get the same message.

Can anyone help me?? I tried Microsoft's Technet , but it does not give
me a solution.

Shane
