I suppose there's no right answer to this. Personally, I use Excel whenever I can and only go to Access for one of two reasons: (a) I need a relational database (I always do flat file work in Excel!); or (b) I need an application to be 'bulletproof' to allow a wide range of users to use it without being able to break anything! For me, filters and views in Access are infinitely easier to set up and far more flexible than Access reports and queries. BUT (and it's a big BUT) you need a user who knows what she or he is doing to make it sing and dance. I'm aware this bit can only be a personal view, but if I could only keep one piece of software installed on my PC it would be Excel. I know I can simulate relational structures in it if I have to and I can even get it to do a pretty good job as a word processor. It's the all round most useful piece of software I own. Having said all of that, I actually earn more money from Access, so bear it absolutely no grudge at all.
