From what I understood, Michigan does have the choice to vote absentee or not.
I refuse to do that, unless I feel it necessary for me to do so. I say that,
because we’ve have had no end of grief with the terminals here. So, if I decide
to give up on being an in your face voter, I’ll vote absentee.
Bea.

I don’t think the President objects to blind people doing absentee ballots. He
made the statement that for those who are truly absentee, or need to complete
ballots that way, he does not object to. But he is objecting having the total
process done by mail. We have choices here in Arizona to do voting either by
mail, or at the polls. But, so far, we cannot complete our ballots online,
making it totally secret, in the by mail process. Michigan should do the same,
regarding giving citizens the choice.

I heard on the news yesterday that the president has negative words and
thoughts about the absentee ballots here in Michigan. He is also threatening to
withhold money from Michigan that is very much needed here. Needless to say,
Governor Whitmer is up in arms about it. According to the president the
absentee ballots were done illegally It will be interesting to see how this all
comes out in the wash. Peggy.

From what I'm hearing from people who voted in May, there's work to be done.
1, you have to print your ballot and get it to the powers that be.
2, then your ballot's transferred to another ballot that's fed into the
machine. So, if this is true you're not voting privately since anything can
be done to that ballot before it's fed into the machine. I think this has
the potential to be something good but it sounds like a lot of work needs to
be done. I probably won't use it in it's currant state if what I've heard is
true.

Hi rich,
It is a little too soon for me to know the actual procedure. I think it
will be done through"Michigan.gov/elections." At least, that is how they
did the May election. I will send out more specifics as I learn about them.
Warmest Regards,
Fred

So are all absentee ballots going to be accessible or do we have to request
that when filling out the application? This is great news job well done.
Thanks.

Hello Fellow Raiders,
Below is very good news for blind people. The U.S. Federal Court has
ordered the Michigan Secretary of State to make absentee ballots accessible
to blind voters. It is not a trivial thing that this was a federal ruling.
The federal courts have a lot of power to enforce their orders. Now,
please vote in August and November. Let everyone know your experience so
that we can make any needed improvements. The Court will be overseeing
this election and the 2022 election to make sure the Secretary of State is
making elections accessible.
I want to thank Jason Terkish and his law firm for taking on this case. I
wish to thank, fellow NFBMI member, Ody Norkin, a really great guy, for
helping us make this happen. Also, the Marc Riccobono, President of the
National Federation of the Blind for supporting the Michigan NFB in joining
as a co-complainant. The involvement of our national office was invaluable
to providing information to the court which the defendants had to agree was
proof that there was no reason blind folks could not vote here in Michigan.
Thank you to my fellow alumni of the Michigan School for the Blind for your
encouragement. It is that Raider Spirit which gives us all hope and
confidence to live in our world as proud Americans who participate in all
the benefits of citizenship.
Warmest Regards,
Fred
