I have a good friend into engineering manufacturing and developement, and also a hobby engineer. he has proved, at our club, that to build a loco, it is cheaper, time, effort, (planning) cost, and availability of materials, the larger you go, is cheaper. With smaller than 5" gauge, more portable, one person can put loco into boot/trunk of car. My personal opinion, smaller gauge L/Es spend hours, breaking up lumps of coal.
