Message Frankly I’m
disappointed in the path Yamaha decided to take. I was looking forward to an
improved motif with dedicated audio tracks, mic preamps, maybe some
improvements to the synth engine, and the ability to record to HDSD drives.
While the new features of the montage are kind of cool, I find them
underwhelming. I doubt that I’ll be running out to buy one any time soon, and
this is coming from someone who had four different motif boards. I just sold
one of them. Bryan likes to refer to them as my fleet of motifs. With the
lack of a song mode, I wouldn’t be able to use this as a live controller to
have different soft synths in reaper or sonar receiving on different midi
channels. While I rarely used the onboard sequencer, it’s nice to have it when
needed, and having samples in nonvolatile ram is good too. And this board
ain’t cheap. Yeah, it’s nice to have FM back, and I would imagine it is now 16
or 24 bit rather than the 12 bit on the original dx7. And of course we would
want to wait until John Melas wrote an editor for it, and unless it truly
becomes as popular as the motif e s and xs or xf are, he won’t have much
insentive to develop one, especially with the far greater of synth parameters
available. That’s too bad.

Still, I agree with his sentiment though. Keyboards should have voice support
if menus are employed! Not everyone can memorise all those key presses! Also,
we should have access to all of the menu that sighted people do including
status messages etc. Synth sounds nice though. Pity I don’t have the cash to
get it at the moment J.

It’s not the type of setup you think it is. All the functions that need to be
done on the touch screen can be executed through key presses. The touch screen
is just an alternative UI for people who work better that way. I.E, visual
workers.
It’s not all that bad. Do your research and you will see? Don’t scare everyone
off because of what you read about in some title to an article. Dig in and get
the facts, all the facts... I refer you guys to this video on youtube that will
tell the story for you.

Hey guys, I just got word that the Yamaha Montage came out. This is there
replacement for the Motif XF, but the problem is, it has a touch screen! We
need to start petitioning Yamaha to create a voice-over for their keyboards, or
something to that degree. I am working on a suggestions for improvement
document to send to Yamaha and plan to post it soon.
God bless,
Seth.
