Frank died Sunday of COVID-19, brought in by someone to the memory care
facility where he lived. It infected at least 29 other residents. He was born
in 1930 to an overbearing mother and a father who would soon leave the family.
He never finished high school, instead he enlisted in the Army at an early
age, served in Korea, returned home, got a job as a short order cook, and
eventually ended up as an auto worker on the night shift at the Ford Walton
Hills Stamping Plant in Northeast Ohio.
He married Sally C after she got pregnant, they had two sons about three
years apart, and bought a tiny house in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Because he
lacked a father, he never learned how to be one. Because he lacked valued
relationships, he never learned how to value a partner, spouse, or friend.
He remarried a few years after Sally’s sudden death in late 2001. His second
wife, Nancy—an accomplished artist and retired teacher—loved him, took care
of him, and encouraged him to create paintings and sculpture. Some of his
work was featured in the Akron Children’s Hospital and most of his sculptures
looked like bent penises.
He loved to dance, golf, ride motorcycles, and stand up against the hallway
wall in his underwear and fart; the echo made him smile. He may not have been
an outstanding human being, but he didn't deserve to die grasping for breath
with no one he knew by his side. He is survived by Nancy and her children,
his two sons, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Some of you have already seen this. Some haven’t.
Frank was my dad.
