My wife and I had been in Memphis visiting her mother and spent Sunday morning
checking the northern delta area. We started by driving a loop on Old Hwy 61,
Norfolk, and Thomas Roads. Good numbers of Horned Larks and Killdeers were
scattered through the area but no migrating shorebirds. We continued down to
Buck Island Road. Starting at the north end of the road, about 1/2 mile down
the road we found a large flock of American Golden-Plovers. They were in a
tilled field on the west side of the road about 200 yards out. Scanning with a
scope, I counted 618 Goldens as a conservative number as there were many
missed. The shear number of birds and the area they covered in the field was
impressive. I will post a full list on eBird.
