Hey All I spent the afternoon wandering about Arkabutla, the Tunica dump, and Buck Island road. I walked the 3 mile loop trail below the spillway hoping for some migrant forest birds. I did not find anything there that was unusual and no FOS species. I did observe a flock of about 20 Red-winged Blackbirds going through the tops of the pine trees and eating the cone seeds like finches. After that I headed over to the Tunica dump area to practice aging gulls (thanks Gull ID workshop). Lots of Ring-billed Gulls but just 2 Herring Gulls. Also, 9 Blue-winged Teal were observed waddling through the gulls loafing area. As I was slowly rolling down Buck Island road I briefly stopped when a few Horned Lark jumped up. As I was sitting there looking at them I heard this really loud WHOOOSSHHH right over the vehicle. I immediately looked over to see a large flock of American Golden Plover coming in for a landing in the ag field. This group was met by several other groups that kept whooshing overhead in succession for a total of 303 individuals counted while panning through the spotting scope. By far the most I have seen in one spot before. The sound of them coming in was really really awesome.
