Those small square islands are MeSquares from QRPME: http://www.qrpme.com/?p=product&id=MES It's a lot of fun building with them: I just glue them to the board as I go. There are cheaper ways to get them, for example making holes in a pcb with a puncher but I had ordered one bag of mesquares and I have barely used a quarter of them. Maybe even less. It's worth the time saved and it allows me to look at the circuit upside down, like I am used too ;) If you want more information on construction technique, I recommend: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kH110yjYZ2g And this blog: https://aa7ee.wordpress.com/tag/manhattan-construction/ This guy (AA7EE) is the real artist! 73!
