I also rushed through my preacher’s training, sitting the 4 exams in one year
(yes, I am that old!). I the. Went to Cliff College and had to do Worship and
Preaching, which Cliff was piloting. I didn’t get accepted for training
immediately, so had 5 year’s preaching experience before entering college. In
college (Wesley Study Centre) I had assessed services, one of which was quite
surreal as there was the organist, the Director of the WSC and 3 students in
the congregation and a pigeon flying around. The steward, for some reason,
remained in the vestry!

I am one of those who “rushed” through my LP Training simply because I would

negative impact on my preaching is not for me to say, but it might explain
some of the long faces who emerged from a service I have lead with the
comment “enjoyed the hymns”!

Hello Friends,
I am often surprised at how many folk who are intending to candidate are
“rushing” through their preacher training in order to complete it in order to
qualify to candidate.
I would have thought that at least a couple of years of preaching on the
Circuit would be of great value rather than entering training with very
little preaching experience.
Best wishes,
Rob.

Ann,
Arguably the academic bar is too high, but the standard of preaching is often
quite low. Those whose preaching is of a good standard achieve this often
despite our training rather than because of it. Yes, I have raised questions
at meetings and been shouted down by people who were so keen to encourage new
preachers they would let anyone through. Now I have given up because I know
no-one will listen.
Best Wishes

Wow!!
Kindly explain “the very low bar that ministers have to get over”
There is nothing ‘low’ in attaining a BA in Theology and all that entails
through ministerial training… study, assignments, placements….And I studied
for three years whilst holding down a demanding full time job.
Is it only me that’s slightly annoyed at some of these comments?
I would like to ask….
Have you raised a discussion at your Leaders of Worship & Preachers Meeting?
Have you undergone the peer assessment as set out by Conference?
How do you encourage new preachers?
How you do support Student Presbyters and Student Deacons?
Are you fully informed of what ministerial training undertakes?
Do you fully support your Circuit staff?
And yes, I am in contact with our Supernumerary ministers before that’s
raised.
Kind regards

We could be more discriminating in discerning people's call to preach but it
won't happen, and how could we justify it given the very low bar that
ministers have to get over? I presume they are accepted for ministry because
a lack of preaching skills is more than made up for by considerable skills in
other areas.
