Exchange Place Spring Garden Fair

The 25th Exchange Place Spring Garden Fair will be held Saturday, April 25, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Sunday, April 26, from 12 - 5 p.m. at Exchange Place Living History Farm, 4812 Orebank Road in Kingsport.  Thousands of plants will be for sale with an emphasis on wildflowers and other natives, herbs, perennials, and heirloom plants (including a wide variety of heirloom tomatoes), along with garden accessories and related crafts.  Heritage breeds of animals and spring activities on a mid-1800’s farmstead combine with gardening/farming experts, traditional music, folk artists, demonstrations and children’s activities for a unique experience.  Volunteers will plow the sorghum patch with the Suffolk draft horses, shear the sheep, spin and weave the wool, cook over the hearth, and shape iron over the forge.  Children can learn more about farm animals and activities with area 4-H groups and can create garden crafts with the Girl Scouts. The second annual Edens Ridge Whimmy Diddle Competition will be at 2pm on Sunday, and volunteers will share the history and dynamics of the whimmy diddle, a native Appalachian folk toy that has been around for centuries.

The Baaaa…ck Porch Sale will be filled with “books, garden items, pottery, and great doodads, gizmos, and thingamadoodles.

This year’s “Talks and Walks” will include information on birds, bees, growing cut flowers, composting, vermiculture, herbal medicine, water gardening, and more.  (For a complete schedule, see the attachment.)  Area Master Gardeners will have a booth with handouts throughout the weekend.  A few more volunteers are still needed to staff the booth.  To volunteer, call Joy Moore at 348-6572 or e-mail jonmoore@xxxxxxxxxx.  Master Gardeners will also be collecting nursery pots for reuse (quarts and larger.)

Admission of $1.00 for adults and $0.50 for children benefits the restoration of Exchange Place.  For more information, please call 423-288-6071.
