Hello, all:

A follow-up article in today's Globe by Russell Smith should provide even more fodder for discussion. Usually I enjoy Smith's columns but I found this one troubling, and not only because he depicts editing as subject to the "quirky and personal tastes" of editors.

Check it out at

Susan: this would make a great discussion topic for the upcoming mini-conference on the publishing industry (May 14). It hasn't been officially announced yet, but it's in the works. There's a portion dedicated to the writing and editing part of the process, whether you're self-publishing or following the traditional publishing route; we're trying to cover both bases. I'll mention this issue at our next meeting.

My feelings are the same. I worry people will just skip the editing step and the result will be books that aren't quite as good as they could be.

Thanks for sharing this, Susan. I have mixed feelings about it: on the one hand, I want to lament the decline of standards in publishing, but on the other I'm happy for the freelancers. I suppose a lot will depend on the pocketbooks of writers. If they're poor will they go to the retired teacher down the road and ignore the professionals? Hmm. Interesting issue. I remember when Naylor was going to outsource its editing to India; not sure if that happened.

Hello all,

I am a new member of the MEA and I thought this article from The Globe & Mail may be pertinent to many of us.
