Was the partition formatted before installation? Are you sure the CD is legal? Are you sure the Windows XP version that you have is not the 64-bit version? If it is a retail version, I do believe you could get free tech support from MS. Are you doing a clean-install as opposed to upgrading from a previous Windows version? If you have another CD drive installed in the computer where you are installing Windows XP or a DVD drive, try using it instead of the CD drive you were using. Disable the network adapter in the bios before you install. <hammerpgh@xxxx> wrote: Hi all, I am having a very frustrating time trying to install Windows XP Pro on my new HDD. Everything initially seems fine as I boot from the original XP Pro CD, select the new HDD to install onto and then format the drive. Once this is completed the setup files are copied across and then the system lets me know that it is about to reboot. This is where it seems to be going wrong!! When it reboots it simply boots from the CD again and goes back through the initial setup phase again rather than progressing from the stage it was at when it rebooted. What am I doing wrong!! This is exactly how I have done it in the past but this time it is giving me a right old headache!! Before rebooting it tells me to remove any disc from Drive A: As I don't have any disc in there I don't do anything. I thought that maybe I should remove the CD so it doesn't boot from there any longer but then the system won't start up properly and just keeps restarting at the point where it normally looks for the CD. Am I losing it... any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks. Are there any USB 1.1 device(s) connected to any of the new USB 2 ports? Your computer will only run as fast as the slowest link in the chain. Do you have any ! marks showing in device manager under USB devices? Is XP's SP1 or SP2 installed? USB2 support for XP was enabled in SP1,SP1a. That being said, there is no way that XP itself is going to update USB 1.1 to 2 unless the PCI to USB Host Controller itself is updated to the use the new drivers. The easiest way to do this is to remove the host controller from device manager, and let XP redetect them on the next startup. Is the USB port or ports you are attempting to use on the front panel of your computer case? The reason I ask is that I had a motherboard that fully supported USB 2 that came with a "cbox" that installs in a floppy bay and has four USB 2 ports on it. Despite the board supporting USB 2 (and SP 1 being installed), using the front-mounted ports with a high speed USB device always resulted in the same message that you've received. Have you removed the USB Host Controllers from Device Manager, and let XP redetect with the new drivers? The correct controllers will say Enhanced, not Standard. Read the documentation that came with your USB 2 controller card. The Windows Catalog <http://shorterlink.com/?SNLZRH> lists several USB 2.0 controller cards that are compatible with Windows XP. Check the WC for compatibility of your device to WXP. Make sure that your new hardware is plugged in and operating (at least at low speed). If Windows XP recognizes your USB 2.0 hardware, it will offer you the chance to download the new USB 2.0 drivers. You can also manually download the driver by following the steps in Universal Serial Bus 2.0 Support in Windows XP <http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=3Dkb;en-us;312370>. The Microsoft USB 2.0 driver may not be listed as an available update if third-party USB 2.0 drivers are installed on your computer. You may have to remove the third-party USB 2.0 drivers, and then install the Microsoft USB 2.0 driver from the Windows Update Web site. Most of the drivers/software that comes with any hardware are routinely 'kicked-out' by XP in Device Manager.. It appears USB2 is supported by Microsoft with Microsoft-only drivers. So the value of trying to install anything that came with any of the USB2 hardware you bought is questionable. This is as it should be I think. I found out over time that XP does a hell of a lot better if you leave a lot of 3rd party software OFF the system. Creative Soundblaster in particular, comes to mind. My soundcard works just fine without all the 'bloatware' Creative thinks I should install. I have a Compact Flash card reader/writer that I use for storage and to transfer stuff to other machines. I also use a USB2 'thumb drive' once in a while. I have an external USB2 40gig hard drive (in addition to my IDE internal) I use for storage etc. The enclosure that holds it and the bridge and cable inside came with USB2 stuff that simply were not allowed by XP(?)= The USB 2.0 drivers for Windows XP that are on Windows Update today only recognize devices using the NEC USB 2.0 EHCI controller chipset. The industry specification for Hi-Speed USB is called the Enhanced Host Controller Interface (EHCI ). That doesn't mean you have to buy an NEC-brand controller. The NEC chipset is fairly ubiquitous in the USB 2.0 world. That chipset is also the first one to be certified by the independent USB 2.0 testing body. Although the USB 2.0 drivers currently available on Windows Update only support the NEC controller, there should be an update soon that supports all EHCI-compliant controllers. If you've made sure that everything on your computer is USB 2.0-compliant, and you're still getting low-speed results, you may not have the right drivers. Symptoms in Windows XP can include error messages such as "The Generic USB Hub is a HI-SPEED USB device and will function at reduced speed when plugged into a non-HI-SPEED port," or "A HI-SPEED USB device is plugged into a non-HI-SPEED USB hub." You may also see your high-speed controller card tagged with a yellow exclamation icon in Device Manager. The problem is that although you have a Hi-Speed hub or controller, Windows XP doesn't recognize it. (See the Knowledge Base article, Universal Serial Bus 2.0 Support in Windows XP <http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=3Dkb;en-us;312370> for more detailed information). Lastly, to complicate this USB speed issue, there are low-speed USB 2 devices and high-speed ones. :) Need to take aspirin. I think I have a computer headache :) SOURCE: USB 2.0 Support in Windows XP: High Speed at Last http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/learnmore/jones_02august= 05.mspx "Gerald R. The easiest way to do this is to remove the host controller from device= manager, and let XP redetect them on the next startup. Is the USB port or ports you are attempting to use on the front panel of your computer case? The reason I ask is that I had a motherboard that= fully supported USB 2 that came with a "cbox" that installs in a floppy bay and has four USB 2 ports on it. Despite the board supporting USB 2 (and SP 1 being installed), using the front-mounted ports with a high speed USB device always resulted in the same message that= you've received. That doesn't mean you have to buy an= NEC-brand controller. Symptoms in Windows XP can include error messages such as "The Generic USB Hub is a HI-SPEED USB device and will function at reduced speed when plugged into a non-HI-SPEED port," or "A HI-SPEED USB device is= plugged into a non-HI-SPEED USB hub." You may also see your high-speed controller card tagged with a yellow exclamation icon in Device Manager. The problem= is that although you have a Hi-Speed hub or controller, Windows XP doesn't recognize it. (See the Knowledge Base article, Universal Serial Bus 2.0 Support in Windows XP= <http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=3Dkb;en-us;312370> for more detailed information). My computer promptly recognized this and notified me that the five new ports (one internal &= four external) were ready for use. I plugged in the newly acquired USB External Hard Drive. Unfortunately, when I turn it on, I get the same message I used to get, i.e., "You have a high speed device connected to a low speed port." The message now goes on to tell me to unplug from the current USB port and connect to any of the five listed high speed ports. I've tried all four of my external ports and get the same message. It seems I have 2.0 ports but my computer continues to operate from the old 1.1 ports. I thought maybe if I disabled the old host controller(s), it might finally use the new host controller. All I managed to do was lose any use of my USB connected mouse until I figured out how to undo my error. XP uses a lot of duplicate files or similarly-named files. Hence this practice probably stretches all the way back to the Registry. That is by design. To avoid conflicts and speed up performance, these duplicates were created. There are also programs that create files that are similarly named to files used by Windows. You've got interesting questions here-- you're migrating from Win2k Server or Pro? XP Pro is a direct upgrade from 2000 Pro, but for Server, I'm pretty sure that requires a reload of the OS. It's generally a good idea to reload the OS when doing an upgrade, but it sounds like this computer might be doing server duty? Are you sure you want XP and not some flavor of Server 2003? The trick is this: SCSI drives are becoming exceedingly rare in desktops (the XP OS in this case) and SCSI RAID is even more rare. Developers will be supporting 2000 Server and Server 2k3 first, and XP only as an afterthought. If you're moving from one RAID controller to another RAID controller, you're looking at backing up and restoring all of your data *anyway* so a reload of the OS is probably just one more step. The MS Server OSes can do RAID 5 in Software, but that's generally not the best route. I'd suspect that board has Server 2k3 drivers available.
