Everything works fine. My perosnal main computer does not have any spy detection software installed at this time just antivirus and fire wall. The only thing I used the machine on line for was to get email and go to known clean sites as well as do software updates. Now I will start using it more and wanted to put Adaware and Spybot in this machine as well. I just was wondering with the forum missing if Lavasoft was going to go out of business or quit supporting the basic users. I was thinking of purchasing one of the retail versions like Spy Sweeper or the likes but they are like antivirus programs and want to charge each year. Anyway I guess it is still safe to install Adaware in my machine. This is from AVG; When a restore point is created while the system is infected with a virus, the virus is included along with the other files. Windows protects those files and will not allow anti-virus programs to delete or modify them in any way. Go to Control Panel and open "System". Click the Performance tab, the File System button, then the Troubleshooting tab. There, choose the option to "Disable System Restore". Click "OK" on the way out, close Control Panel= and restart the computer. After the computer has restarted, update AVG manually by double clicking= the AVG icon in the System Tray (by the clock). In the AVG Control Center click the "Update Manager" tab, then the "Update Now" button. The latest update= is today. Next, right click the AVG icon in the System Tray and select "Run AVG Anti-Virus". When AVG opens click the "Run Complete Test" button. It will notify you if it finds anything during the test and afterwards, show the results of the test. If the system tests clean, proceed as described below. Now you need to reverse the procedure described above to re-enable System Restore, then restart the computer. Disabling System Restore as above= clears all previous restore points. Go to Start Menu / Programs / Accessories / System Tools and click System Restore. Check to see if Windows created a restore point (System Checkpoint) after you enabled it. If not, click the "Back" button and create one manually. From there if I have no bugs on the machine with spyware software I feel safe to visit the same site on my other machine. The end of a free Ad-Aware Se Personal is certainly something being talked about. That's one of the reasons I pointed you to that forum thread. There are links in that thread to many other forums talking the same way.As to what the answer is- Who knows? As long as the free version is still being updated, and you can get support from other forums, all should be ok."Still being updated" is the operative here. Spyware detection is a crowded and growing field now. There are so many pretenders out there that you really need to be careful.A good site to bookmark that keeps a continually updated list of "Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites" can be found at: http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm A layered defense is what's important. First I don't like software suites that try to do it all. e.g. Symantec or McAfee. They have ways of permeating virtually every corner of your system. If a problem developes with these suites seems like you have trouble everywhere. I believe you should have an antivirus program dedicated to just that. Your firewall should be just that.Your spyware programs should be for detection and removal of spyware.A suite that encompasses all these things is just too intrusive to the system and requires too many resources. Now what confuses all this is that one spyware detection program is not enough. So far there is no one do all,be all program. This means you need a good mix of programs to protect your machine. At least two,but more is ok as long as you don't run them all at the same time. Rather than go on here with an even longer posting,I'd like to point you to a sister group to MCH located at: http://s11.invisionfree.com/SpunkyMcSpank/index.php?act=3Didx Where the owner(Spunkovision)has a Library topic called "Reference Articles" listing all the accepted malware products, where to get them and how to use them.Pay special attention to the "Malware Issues" section. You will need a password to get into these articles. You will need to register for the board to get access(free). After you create your board ID and password, you will be given the password to access the Library section. There is a lot of info there. You will be able to make informed choices after absorbing it.You can also ask questions on the board if you need help.
