Just want to let everyone know that I just created a new computer
support forum site. I am in the process of testing its configurations
and users settings. I'm still learning how to use some of the
features. But the site is at its seminal stage. I have already created
3 forums and posted three reference articles for members to avail of.
This site may not be for everyone, specially dialup members, since you
have to be online at the time you are reading the postings, instead of
downloading the messages. But if you are interested to join do let me
know privately so I can give you the website address where you can
read the postings (right now, there are just a few long articles to
read at The Library Forum) and register. As of yet, I will only give
the site address to MCH, MCH-PCTips & Steveandjohnnie members only and
members of other allied Yahoogroups such as Pro_Tech and
  ComputerSupport_2.

I can't register you. You have to do it on your own since you have to
create your own password. Also, you need to email me back as soon as you
are done with registration because you will need another password which I
created as a key to access The Library.

People are slowly trickling in to become members but I'm still working out
the bugs and learning how to configure the forums and users' permissions
correctly. I'm slowly but surely learning. Be patient. It takes awhile to
make a FORUMS site great. Most of the postings at the current time are in
The Library, although there are some others posted in other Forums outside
The Library. If you experience anything not normal, do let me know so I can
look into the problem. Any suggestions from you are most welcome.

Thank you for expressing your interest in joining MCH Forums. Remember to
email me back after you register.

By the way, are you a guy or a woman? I know a guy whose name is Andrea.

The PC is a three-year-old DELL, running WinXP Pro. Is there an easy way to
tell at which "level" (1.1 or 2.0) the installed USB services run? The
owner's manual is of no help.

TIA,

Just go to your Device Manager, and expand the Universal Serial Bus
controllers category and look for the words USB 2 or Enhanced Host
Controller. If you rightclick it, then go to its Properties, and then
General tab, it will pretty much confirm that you have USB 2 support.
Absence of these elements means you are just using USB 1.1.
For a good MS article on XP's level of support for USB 2, go here:

USB 2.0 Support in Windows XP: High Speed at Last
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/networking/learnmore/jones_02august=
05.mspx
This article might clear some misconceptions about USB and WinXP.

Seems the Ad-Aware SE Forums have been down for over a month now with

they are upgrading their Forum.Must be one heck of an upgrade. :-)

Regardless,go to the following address where you will find many
comments, and several links to assorted help sites that have set up
forums dedicated to Ad-Aware SE Personal. The owners of paid versions
can still get help thru Lavasoft email support.

Thanks for finding something. I can't even think how much time I
spent on looking for the darn thing.

The reason I was concerned is I have done most of my browsing on a
different computer that has Adaware installed. Everything works
fine. My perosnal main computer does not have any spy detection
software installed at this time just antivirus and fire wall. The
only thing I used the machine on line for was to get email and go to
known clean sites as well as do software updates.

Now I will start using it more and wanted to put Adaware and Spybot
in this machine as well. I just was wondering with the forum missing
if Lavasoft was going to go out of business or quit supporting the
basic users.

I was thinking of purchasing one of the retail versions like Spy
Sweeper or the likes but they are like antivirus programs and want
to charge each year.

Anyway I guess it is still safe to install Adaware in my machine.

Hi Bev,
if the infections are in the backup files, it may be that she has not
turned off System Restore before trying to remove the infections.

This is from AVG;
When a restore point is created while the system is
infected with a virus, the virus is included along with the other files.
Windows protects those files and will not allow anti-virus programs to
delete or modify them in any way.

Go to Control Panel and open "System". Click the Performance tab, the File
System button, then the Troubleshooting tab. There, choose the option to
"Disable System Restore". Click "OK" on the way out, close Control Panel=
 and
restart the computer.

After the computer has restarted, update AVG manually by double clicking=
 the
AVG icon in the System Tray (by the clock). In the AVG Control Center click
the "Update Manager" tab, then the "Update Now" button. The latest update=
 is
today.

Next, right click the AVG icon in the System Tray and select "Run AVG
Anti-Virus". When AVG opens click the "Run Complete Test" button. It will
notify you if it finds anything during the test and afterwards, show the
results of the test. If the system tests clean, proceed as described below.

Now you need to reverse the procedure described above to re-enable System
Restore, then restart the computer. Disabling System Restore as above=
 clears
all previous restore points. Go to Start Menu / Programs / Accessories /
System Tools and click System Restore. Check to see if Windows created a
restore point (System Checkpoint) after you enabled it. If not, click the
"Back" button and create one manually.

One of the saddest things about the newer more intrusive spyware is
that even "known clean sites" can have a bug that they don't yet know
about.I'd load some spyware programs as soon as possible. :-)

I failed to mention that she's still running Win98. When I checked my
older 'puter (that is also running Win98), I was able to follow each step
until I got to "choose the option to 'Disable System Restore.'" That
option isn't listed on the Troubleshooting tab. :(

Please can you send me the instructions for Win98SE? I can't find anything=

addressing the System Restore in my AVG Free.

Rich,

I am sure that is very true. The only thing that makes me believe I am
safe is that since at the sites I visit is I have the spyware programs
on one computer I visit any site I want to look at on that machine
first, then scan my computer. From there if I have no bugs on the
machine with spyware software I feel safe to visit the same site on my
other machine.

I also just finished reading the forum you pointed to and some of the
other forums that they speak about. It appears that this could
possibly be the end of Adaware, atleast as far as supporting the free
product goes.

Maybe some readers that have purchased the paid for versions of other
brands such as Pest Patrol and Spyware Sweeper to name just 2 can give
some input as to what they use and how good it is.

I bought PestPatrol and SpySweeper. They each find
different things. I also use the free Spybot and
Adaware which sometimes find things the paid programs
miss.

Vince
You know best when it comes to your machines.

The end of a free Ad-Aware Se Personal is certainly something being
talked about. That's one of the reasons I pointed you to that forum
thread. There are links in that thread to many other forums talking
the same way.As to what the answer is- Who knows? As long as the free
version is still being updated, and you can get support from other
forums, all should be ok."Still being updated" is the operative here.

Spyware detection is a crowded and growing field now. There are so
many pretenders out there that you really need to be careful.A good
site to bookmark that keeps a continually updated list of
"Rogue/Suspect Anti-Spyware Products & Web Sites" can be found at:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm

A layered defense is what's important.
First I don't like software suites that try to do it all.
e.g. Symantec or McAfee. They have ways of permeating virtually every
corner of your system. If a problem developes with these suites seems
like you have trouble everywhere.

I believe you should have an antivirus program dedicated to just that.
Your firewall should be just that.Your spyware programs should be for
detection and removal of spyware.A suite that encompasses all these
things is just too intrusive to the system and requires too many
resources.

Now what confuses all this is that one spyware detection program is
not enough. So far there is no one do all,be all program. This means
you need a good mix of programs to protect your machine. At least
two,but more is ok as long as you don't run them all at the same time.

Rather than go on here with an even longer posting,I'd like to point
you to a sister group to MCH located at:
http://s11.invisionfree.com/SpunkyMcSpank/index.php?act=3Didx

Where the owner(Spunkovision)has a Library topic called "Reference
Articles" listing all the accepted malware products, where to get them
and how to use them.Pay special attention to the "Malware Issues"
section. You will need a password to get into these articles. You will
need to register for the board to get access(free). After you create
your board ID and password, you will be given the password to access
the Library section.

There is a lot of info there. You will be able to make informed
choices after absorbing it.You can also ask questions on the board if
you need help. Hope this helps,
Rich S
