Well, the solution to the problem turned out to be to click on the
magic track pad. Somebody on a different list suggested doing that
prior to resorting to the forced shutdown, and it did the job,
bringing vo focus back to the authentication window. The one thing I
never thought of, trying the mouse. <sigh>
