A number of us have reported this since day one of Snow Leopard.
Anne Robertson explains the behavior with the following statement. VO now pauses when it meets a newline character. You'll also have 
problems with messages in HTML. The solution to that one is to press
Command-Option-p to turn it into plain text.

I am amazed at how efficient moving from the messages table to the text of messages works, it is lightning fast.
It seems like VO pauses at the end of each line of the message, creating an unnatural reading experience. 
Any way to change this behavior?
