You are saying that you had 'require password' checked but could not enter it
anyway !
I did not have 'require password' checked.
With the screen sleep set to Never this should not arise anyway.
Well, I am keen to know what you observe, I still have not heard the
notification, still set to never for the meantime.

I am assuming by screen sleep you mean "display" as this is what my
preferences pane for Energy Saver has. I had it at 20 minutes and have now
put it on "never".
I had finally turned off the password despite warnings but then checked it
again and changed the time to 8 hours (unfortunately there is not a never
which I guess makes sense because if you want never you would uncheck it) but
then changed the time to 8 hours and then unchecked the box again. But I
notice in going back in today that the checkbox remained unchecked but had
been set back up at 'immediately though it is still dimmed.
I am going to try things now with display sleep at never and require password
unchecked and also dimmed and see if that stops this. It is a major annoyance
especially since, if you don't have the password part checked, it shouldn't
even be bringing up your user and password fields; mine were dimmed anyway so
I couldn't have entered a password if I had wanted to. Will let you know if
this solves the problem and also if it solves related Kindle speech
interruption problems. If you do any kind of an update or even just reboot,
it may be a good idea to make sure your settings haven't been changed.

I am confident I have found the source of this problem.Cheryl, and anyone else frustrated with constant authentication log-in
announcements that disappear !
Firstly, I am running a 2017 21.5" iMac with solid state drive and High
Sierra. I first noticed this problem when I received this machine running
Sierra.
The source of the announcement is the screen sleep function, and there are
two parts to this.
In the Energy Saver preference my period before entering screen sleep was 20
minutes, possibly the default, I have reset it to Never with a warning that
this may reduce the life of the screen. I will change this after I complete
this study even though I use the screen curtain.
After making this change I have not heard the irritating announcement.
The second part is in the Security and Privacy preference where you can
choose to require a password after the screen or screen saver has been
activated. This option has always been unchecked. The next option is the time
period to wait before the authentication is required, the default is
'immediately'.
My assumption is that with the announcement set to immediately the window has
been triggered and VO speaks it but it then disappears, even though I have
the previous option set to no password.
I intend to change the option from immediate to a time period, perhaps five
minutes, also taking my screen sleep off Never, perhaps back to 20 minutes,
and observe what happens.
I am interested to know whether you also find this to solve the issue in your
machine.
