Had this problem many years ago on my iMac, I cannot remember the OS, possibly
Lion.
It is a bit of a nuclear option butI found ten that making a completely fresh
install of the Mac OS from the Recovery Console solved the problem for me.
This was from a clearn install. There may be a way of using a Utility to
refresh your hardware detection on a Mac but I am unaware of a utility with
this function.
It might be something you would want to consider as a last resort.

Hi. I am trying to use headphones which plug in to my headphone jack. My
mac won’t recognize them, although it has in the past. When I go to system
preferences, go to sound, go to output device, the only output device listed
in the table is my internal speakers. If I plug my headphones in, I hear
nothing, so don’t know if headphones would then be recognized or not so I
could select it. How can I get my headphones to be recognized or at least
