Go into Voiceover utility and set your internal speakers as the output device
for voiceover. Then plug your headphones back in and go back into sound and see
if they are listed there.

Subject: [mac4theblind] getting my mac to recognize my headphones
Hi. I am trying to use headphones which plug in to my headphone jack. My mac
won’t recognize them, although it has in the past. When I go to system
preferences, go to sound, go to output device, the only output device listed in
the table is my internal speakers. If I plug my headphones in, I hear nothing,
so don’t know if headphones would then be recognized or not so I could select
it. How can I get my headphones to be recognized or at least choose headphones
from the table. Thanks. ************
