Whoever wrote the Wittgenstein entry in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy
http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/wittgenstein/#Lanreminds me that language games are always part of an activity, and broadly speaking part of a form of life. To say that they are 'part of an activity' is to say that they are essential to it, that the forms of language used are not just something laid over the 'surface' of an activity that could perfectly well go on without them.
