Bertolt Brecht Werke: Gedichte 2. Vol. 12. Berlin: Aufbau-Verlag, 1988; pp. 85-7. >>> Donal McEvoy <donalmcevoyuk@xxxxxxxxxxx> 27/04/2012 11:50 AM >>> From: Adriano Palma <Palma@xxxxxxxxxx> > hence the "world" is not inclusive of modalities (what gets expressed by the modal "might") relax, the thing is laughable....> On the contrary, we can refer to the "world" in several senses: this may be restricted to the actual world (the world of those possibilities that have been realised) or taken more widely to encompass "the world of all possibilities" (whether realised or not). In science, we might rightly restrict the sense of "world" to the actual world - since only realised possibilties can be observed and so only these can operate as empirical falsifiers of statements (unrealised possibilities cannot be used as empirical falsifiers as they are, ipso facto, unobserved). Here "world" may denote "the world of realised possibilties".Though it may be important to recognise that a permanent line between the actual world and "the world of possibilities" cannot be drawn.* But in an exercise in 'philosophical logic' like TLP we may examine the "world of all possibilities (realised or not)" and hence use "world" in this sense to denote "logical space". This is not laughable. What may be laughable is to think we can so easily conclude "hence the "world" is not inclusive of modalities". We may, for certain purposes, take it in a sense which includes "modalities". D *A hitherto unrealised possibility may later be realised: the 'actual world' can never wane (no realised possibility can be unrealised) but it may wax as hitherto unrealised possibilities become realised. Hence, that a 'statement must be falsifiable to be scientific' leaves open critical discussion as to how far a statement may be from being falsifiable, as its status in regard of its falsifiability may alter (from presently unfalsifiable to falsifiable) with the development of new tests. And so we may draw a distinction between (1) claims that are presently testable/falsifiable by observation and (2) those claims that may not be presently testable but which are 'falsifiable in principle' and (3) those statements that are not even 'falsifiable in principle':- and critical discussion of the classification of statements according to this tripartite division may be on-going, particularly in problematic cases ('String Theory'), and may alter over time, particularly with the development of new tests. This indicates that a permanent line between the actual world and "the world of possibilities" (more particularly that part of "the world of possibilties" that is unrealised) can never be drawn. It may also be remarked that one of the important functions of a developing new tests is to take advantage of the scope for realising hitherto unrealised possibilities: this increases 'falsifiability' by increasing 'what is observable' by tests.
