Ask a Christian about Genesis 1 and they tell you that God created the
universe ex nihilo; ask a Jew and they tell you that "the deep" was
already present at creation; ask a linguist and they compare the root of
the Hebrew word for "the deep" with "Tiamat," from whose dead body the
world was made as per Babylonians; ask a cab driver and they claim not
to know the address of the club but think it's somewhere on South
Broadway. Only Geary speaks with circumspection, simultaneously above
the fray and laughing at it.
