"Phil Enns" writes what I thought was a sloppy quiz, in a second phonetic
attempt ("Fille Aeunnz") he rightly corrects me.

It is indeed from Latin, 'terminus', the end -- termination.

1629 MASSINGER Picture III. vi, I left a letter in my chamber-window Which I
would not have seen on any terms.
1884 Manch. Exam. 11 June 5/1 To..call in the help of the other Powers on
their own terms.

The term 'term' can also mean 'menstrual' period:

1545 T. RAYNALDE Byrth Mankynde (1564) 26 Termes be called in Latin
Menstrua... In Englyshe they be named Termes, because they returne eftsoones at

certayne seasons, tymes, and termes.
1714 JONTEL Jrnl., etc. 143 When the Women have their Terms, they leave the
Company of their Husbands.
[if they are married in the first place. JLS]

"Phil Enns" expands:

>it's _on_
>we must appreciate a work of art on its own terms.

So will you please delete the scares -- it may scare one.

>if it were, the question in the subject-title might be answered only by
some definition.

As if there were _another_ way to 'finita la terminazione' (to end the
term), cfr. 'finis', definitio, terminus, finitus.

Oc ourse we _have_ to appeal to some definition, implicit or other.

>"capitalism's own terms.

Right. I thought about it. It would be stupid to think that an 'object of
art' can have terms to negotiate, hence your (qua lawyer) scare I guess.

( ) She must appreciate _one_ work of art on the object-d'art's terms.

I don't do 'own'. Isn't that redundant?

You must confide: you must have seen that expression in a daily and you got
all irritated.
There are more serious things in life to consider than that!

First, an object doesn't have _terms_. Only legal agents do.
Second: de appreciationis non est disputanda

So the answer is: ""YES!""

Cheers,

JL
