Mmm. Difficult task. Geary has the original Latin manuscript (by Novalis)
and he (Geary) may be able to help further.
Interestingly, Novalis's surname was actually "Neuer(mann)", but he
transliterated to "Novalis", a Late-Latinism. The entry in the OED below.
