Results of Spanish "presidential" (there, the prime minister is called "President of the Government") elections : Turnout PP (Aznar's party) PSOE (Socialist opp) 2000 69% 44% 183 MP's 34% 125 2004 77% 37% 148 42% 164 There are 350 MP's. Other winner are the socialists of Catalunya, climbing from 1 to 8 MP's. The winner is 44 y-o Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero (another JL... in fact he's usually referred as ZP). Zapatero is the grandson of a hero of the Republican forces in Civil War, shot by the franquists in 1936. He was first elected to the Cortes in '86, aged 26. Due to the particularities of the Spanish voting system, he got 11 million personal votes, highest score ever in Spanish democracy. BTW, did you know John Kerry has a first cousin in France, Brice Lalonde (their mothers were sisters). Once leader of the French "Greens", he ran for President in 1981 (got 3.9%) and was Ministre de l'Environnement in Mitterrand's gov. from '88 to '92. His Party, Generation Ecologie disappeared in 2002. The cousins often met in their childhood in a family house in France. They were together in the Kyoto conference in '97. I wonder why I see no trace of this family link on Kerry's site :-) Didier Agid PASSAGE www.georgesbrassens.org ------------------------------------------------------------------ To change your Lit-Ideas settings (subscribe/unsub, vacation on/off, digest on/off), visit www.andreas.com/faq-lit-ideas.html
