G'Mornin' Gary!

Thanks for the pointer re: the OLY -> L-R adapter.

As I was making my decision to buy the 20D, my dealer let me play with an E-1.
It has a very nice build quality (I think much better than the 20D - at least
from the outside) and the finder blew me away. Despite being a smaller camera
(and I'm a boy with big hands), I found the Oly nicer/easier to hold. It has a
good "grip". Perhaps the brighter finder is because the Oly lenses are all
much faster than the equivalent Canon lenses. This is possible because of the
smaller sensor level, though I'm not sure that Oly lenses are up to Canon
standards. (The Oly lenses I had with my OM-1 were a dissappointment, and the
Canon zoom I bought is certainly not up to Leica standards!)

For all the complaints of the Canon finder being dim, - well, it's lovely with
a 50 or 90 Summicron on it! As for the focusing - it's not anywhere near the
quality of an SL/R8 or R9. It's more along the level of an R3. Still, it's
functional and you get used to it quite quickly.

One thing I have discovered is that the 20D (and presumably the 350D) has a
problem with colour fringing at ISO 1600 when you have a high contrast edge,
and the lighting is just right. (or is that, "just wrong"?)

Still, the shots are almost grain free, which spoils many an enlargement. And
for me, the ability to readily hand hold a 1280mm combination (400mm Telyt + 2X
converter x 1.6 factor) at f13.6 is worth the risk on some shots. When it
works, it's great! A marvellous boon for wildlife photography.

Y'know, it's easy to say you'd only have the best, when you're not buying. But
when it's your own money, "value" becomes an issue. In past, I've solved the
problem of 'value', by buying used Leica gear. But good, used dslr's are
scarce as hen's teeth. There was a time (just 6 months ago) when I swore I'd
have nothing but a DM-R. However the desire to try digital with my Leica glass
and the realities of the wallet led me to the 20D. And to be honest, I've very
happy with the combination and the results.

Good luck! Keep us informed what you do, and what you think of your purchase.
Such "reviews" will help others in their transition to the digital world.

Cheers!

David.
