Sorry to be late answering, but we spent the last few days visiting old friends
in the Seattle area.
I am fully with Frank... his advice is good. I've seen far too many cloud
services suddenly disappear with peoples photos. One, can't remember which
one it was, did give folks 30 days to download, but most often, they're just
gone.
Perhaps the only difference is that I use two USB3.0 "docks", which hold raw
drives ... a wee bit cheaper to purchase.

My only complaint about much of the backup software is that it puts the backup
in some proprietary format and you MUST use their software to get your files
back. To me, that's another point of failure.
I prefer a backup program that simply duplicates your files and have used YADIS
Backup (Free) for many years, with great success, but it is no longer being
maintained. A variety of alternatives can be found here:

I may need to soon look at an alternative. I've looked at Frank's "Acronis
True Image" but it's not clear, from their website just how it stores the
files. Since it will also clone, I'm thinking they are straight forward files.

Like Bill, I store on HD at my brothers place. And, when we go away, the local
backup drives are placed in an old, fireproof safe that I've had since I ran my
stores. Just in case.

PS: Flickr, nice as it is, is not a reliable backup for your images, either.
Good morning to you all. With the news about MySpace digital loss of------
some 12 years worth of digital files and the other previous cloud
companies losing data, how are y'all backing up your image files? I know
the subject was briefly discussed a few weeks ago, but I've lost that
email chain. After moving some boxes of slides and negatives last night
and hearing the MySpace news this morning brought the subject to mind.
I recall David Young having a series of external hard drives, but I'd
like to hear about your process again David, if you're up for repeating
it. And if anyone else has a process other than a "cloud-service" I sure
would be interested in hearing about it. Currently, I only have my few
digital files on my Mac's HD with a slight "insurance policy" in the one
external HD used for Apple's background application, Time Machine. I've
been tasked by family members with scanning our parents photos and
documents, so a sound straight-forward process for archiving would be
very useful to me. Thank you.
I have to say that after moving the negatives and slides last night and
hearing this morning's news, I think back to someone whom many of you
knew probably quite well, Tom Abrahammson, and his love for film. I
never had the pleasure of meeting him, but every time I use his Rapid
Winder on my M6 I think fondly of him, his designs, and his enthusiasm
for Leica and 35mm. To his memory I say "Thank you, Tom".
