Another thing to consider that I have just found out about. Some portable
drives have hardware encryption. The USB controller encrypts the data
before writing it to the drive. In these cases, if your drive fails due to
the USB circuit failing, you may never get your data off the drive. If you
crack open that drive and put it in a new enclosure or hook it up directly,
you will not be able to read the data. Here is a link showing which WD

This one says that you could use another circuit board of the same model to
recover your data, but a computer wizard I know thinks that might not be the
case.
So, if you are going this route, be sure to choose a drive in which the USB
controller does not encrypt the data.
Not sure about other brands. I have not been able to find info about them.
So use WD Elements drives to be safe. Or use bare drive in your own
enclosures or docks.
That is the route I am going to take in the future since I can't seen to
find info on Seagate drives.

There is nothing special in the way I handle my bare drives. They often sit
on my desk, for weeks - not in anti-static bags, or any other form of
protection.
When they finally get put away, they are in a Pelican case (for rapid
grabbing in case of forest fire) which is foam filled, though I don't know
if it is an anti-static foam.
Still, in a decade, despite this abuse, no sign, not even a hint, of
failure.

So that those that take the "toaster" route are fully informed of your
environment, .... which appears to work just fine......
How do you store the bare drives? In the somewhat reflective bags they
came in? ( Bags are actually conductive)
I use conductive plastic "cases" with an end opening like a Zippo
lighter..... for my spare (old, not very big but yet to be recycled)
drives. Cost about $2.50 each on eBay

You may be right, Frank. But, I've been using these "toasters" for a
decade now, without a single hint of a problem.
But that risk is why I always have my photos on 3 hard-drives, not
counting the internal ones.

The use of the Toaster type of HDD holder has one problem..------
The electronic parts in the HDD are damaged ( although slightly) by
incorrectly handling of the bare drive. If you do not use proper
grounding and handling techniques, you are damaging the drive each
time you touch/insert/remove/change it.
Eventually, the accumulated damage destroys the electronics.
