I spent a week this summer whale watching from the shore in Tadoussac. We saw a lot of whales (minke, beluga and humpback) and many of the minke came within about 100-200 meters of the shore. However, my 250/4 Telyt R9/DMR combo is simply too short to get any sort of detail on the whale. I think a 500mm would be good focal length for that. I don't have a 500mm photo lens but I do have a 500mm telescope (Takahashi Sky90. f=5.6). This is a doublet but it is APO corrected. This "lens" weighs about 7 lbs and focuses by turning a knob (just like working a bellows). I can mechanically adapt the R9 to the telescope, but before I go ordering adpaters, I would like some advice on whether my thoughts are feasible/practical. I have two areas of concern: weight and needing one hand to turn the wheel focuser. Weight. With 7lbs of lens and 3lbs of camera, I think I need a monopod. Is it possible to carry 10lbs on a shoulder stock ? I guess I could use my existing telescope mount (Takahashi Teegul) but it means lugging more stuff around. Focusing. Is knob focusing even practical for wildlife? If I go with a monopod, I will use my left hand to grip the monopod and my right to focus. I will need a cable release mounted on the monopod to trigger the R9. Is there a monopod with an integrated grip and a cable release mounted in the grip? Alternatively I could just buy another Leica lens.
