Hi David,
I was fortunate enough to work when commodity prices were rising and my bosses
rewarded good work with perks like first class travel. In 12 months spanning
1992 - 93 I made thirteen first class trips across the Pacific pond and when
the bean counters looked at my travel claims it was decided at the Board level
that it was cheaper to move me and my family to Hong Kong and open an office
there. So it was done.
With all that travel I was offered a lifetime membership in the Cathay Pacific
Marco Polo Club which has helped me to get upgrades from time to time despite
flying much less now. Four hundred lifetime memberships were issued and as the
members pass on there are no renewals. Perhaps I will be the last one standing
(and flying).
Cheers
Howard

Howard,
Your memories of 747s are better than my first time. I was flying (late '70's)
to Chicago for the CES (Consumer Electronics Show - now held in Las Vegas) and
had decided to take one of my salesmen. There was a deal - First Class in a
747, between Seattle and Chicago, for just $50 over the price of "cattle class".
But, when we got to Seattle, the plane was in for unscheduled maintenance, and
we were put in an old, stretched, DC-8. The service was nice, but somehow,
just not the same.
I have flown, since, in several 747s, but never in first.
David.
