Manuel and I had a Canyon Towhee at the house/visitor center when we went to
get my car. I noticed that neither Mourning nor Eurasian-Collared dove made the
list. Also, the White-crowned Sparrow listing with a count of two should be
White-throated instead. The one I saw well was a tan-striped morph.
The Common Poorwills, one male & one female, flushed from almost the same
spot-making me wonder whether they were a breeding pair. None of my references
indicate whether pairs travel together in migration or how late a breeding pair
would be expected in our area. I suppose it’s possible two unacquainted birds
just happened to like that roost, a parent and offspring were migrating
together, among other speculative possibilities.
The Junco was a “Gray-headed” form rather than our more common wintering
Oregon, Slate-colored and Pink-sided forms. It was probably “caniceps”
subspecies based on my impression of face pattern, but I didn’t pay enough
attention to the bill to rule out “dorsalis”.
Great morning of birding. Thanks again to Manuel for setting things up and
showing us around.
