Agree with Lena. Glenda is a great motivator and more than that works hard
herself on the front lines. I see my role in the organization as backing her
play as best I can, to use a movie gunfighting term.
Birds are the canaries in our coal mines and an entree to environmental
responsibility and now more than ever that is needed. "Who doesn't love
birds?" is Jack Black's opening line in the movie "The Big Year." Let us
bring birds and concern for their welfare and what that means into the values
of our community.

#yiv2832528149 P {margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0;}Perhaps you have already
noticed this about Glenda, but she is a wonderfully positive force in the
community. In recent weeks alone, she's been responsible for relocating ducks
in danger of losing their habitat to a more stable urban lake, as well as
organizing our bird walks and playa cleanups. She's also done immense amounts
of work on the trail at Buffalo Springs trail. In addition to her work ethic,
it hasn't gone unnoticed how uplifting her posts are on the listserv. She
always shares in the excitement of a good bird find and never criticizes or
complains. In fact, since meeting her, I have never seen her in a bad mood. It
has made me reevaluate the worthiness of my own frustrations and inspired me to
let things so. I hope you too will become inspired to follow in her footsteps.
There is great joy in coming out of the shadows and working to better the
community.
Glenda will likely point out that she's had help in these accomplishments. I
tip my hat toMatt Smith, South Plains Wildlife Rehab, Rob Lee, and several
members of theSouth Plains Texas Master Naturalist and LEAS organizations.
Thank you all for the work you do and the time you've spent helping to get
things done!
Lena
P.S. My error on the Tahoka bird species count. Let's label them as
"highlights."

Thank you to all in attendance and most especially to Manuel. Also, big thanks
to Lena for compiling the bird list.
For those who noticed I had to scoot out before the bird walk ended, I am happy
to report I was in charge of a trash collection event atLeroy Elmore Park from
10am - 1pm which yielded 70 bags (33 gal size) of trash collected from along
the shore and in the water. We were able to remove all the reachable plastic
bags (up to 6’ out) in the water. The total estimated weight of trash collected
was in excess of 2,800#. We made a positive impact for both the birds and our
community today. The event was attended by 26 volunteers. I apologize to Manuel
and all present for my inability to stay for the entire bird walk. Regrettably,
the conflict was unavoidable. Thank you for your understanding.
The next bird walk will be announced soon. Please continue participating. It’s
so exciting!
