We watched the birds and fisherman interaction with herring Friday in sun
and Sat in the torrential rain and wind with periods of sun. Great to see
these birds up so close at the edge of the rocks.
Fisherman were catching 6 herring at a time, in mere minutes, after casting
their lines out , to be used later for bait .
We heard that Orcas were in channel feeding on herring also a day or two
earlier.
Will visit again today. My only comparison is watching hundreds of
shorebirds and ducks and once an ancient murrelet on July 1 2006 feed on
young common carp at the Narrows on Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.
There is a good chance that water and carp from Malheur Lake may be at the
Narrows again this year after a long absence, as Malheur Lake continues to
rise from abundant snow melt for a second year. The basin snowpack was at
140 percent of normal as of March 1, the second highest in the state after
Owyhee Basin at 147.
