Can you do mail store and forward for me though?  (i.e. if I want to run a
SMTP-based server)

As regards the ADSL bodge, remember that this is only practical if your
exchange hasn't been upgraded to ADSL yet, since if you failed the line test
due to signal strength you're not going to have any signal to carry the line
on no matter what you do at either end.
