NASA Science News

1) March 9, 2007 Orbital Express Launches Successfully
http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2007/09mar_orbitalexpress.htm?list111411
The Orbital Express mission to demonstrate cutting-edge automated
rendezvous and docking technologies blasted off from Cape Canaveral
last night. The successful launch marks the beginning of three months
of intensive testing in low Earth orbit.

2) March 12, 2007 STEREO Eclipse
http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2007/12mar_stereoeclipse.htm?list111411
No human has ever witnessed a solar eclipse quite like this: NASA's
STEREO-B spacecraft was about a million miles from Earth last month
when it photographed the Moon passing in front of the sun. The
resulting movie looks like it came from an alien solar system.

3) March 14, 2007 Shooting Marbles at 16,000 mph
http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2007/14mar_marbles.htm?list111411
NASA scientists are shooting marbles at 16,000 mph--and destroying
them, splat!--to learn what happens when meteoroids hit the Moon.

HILTON POND 03-01-07 (Flying Squirrels)
<http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek070301.html>
Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History has always been
available for students, scientists, and educators to conduct
research or nature observations. This week a grad student from Wake
Forest University came down to take a look at Southern Flying
Squirrels, Glaucomys volans, in some of our bluebird nest boxes.
To view our current photo essay about flying squirrels and what the
grad student found, please visit the 1-7 March 2007 installment of
As always we include a tally of all birds banded--and there were a
lot of them--plus a list of interesting recaptures. There's also a
photo of what Hilton Pond looked like after the torrential rains
on 1 March.

Sun-Earth Day Celebration on March 20, 2007
http://sunearthday.nasa.gov/2007/index.php
Sun-Earth Day is comprised of a series of programs and events that
occur throughout the year, culminating with a celebration on, or near,
the Spring Equinox. This year's celebration is on March 20, 2007, and
includes a live webcast with NASA experts.
Over the past six years, the NASA's Sun-Earth Connection Education
Forum has sponsored and coordinated education and public outreach
events to highlight NASA's Sun-Earth Connection research and
discoveries. This effort involves using celestial events, such as
total solar eclipses and the Transit of Venus, as well as Sun-Earth
Day during the March Equinox, to engage K-12 schools and the public in
space science activities, demonstrations and interactions with space
scientists.
For more information and educational resources, including posters,
flyers, postcards and an educator kit, visit the Sun-Earth Day

Learn what it would have been like to witness the megaflood, how
not just one but numerous megafloods may have occurred, what
geologic mysteries the scablands still hold, and more in this
interview with geologist and scablands expert Vic Baker.
