This week on NASAexplores we're featuring articles from NASA's Aeronautics
Research and Space Operations Mission Directorates. You will be updated on
the latest breakthrough in scramjet technology with "Setting A New Speed
Record." There are many satellites and spacecraft that orbit the Earth, but
in "What Goes Up...Doesn't Always Come Down," you will learn of the many
other items up there as well. Below are abstracts of the articles, as well
as brief descriptions of the accompanying lessons for each grade level.

To access the articles and lessons, please visit the NASAexplores web site.

Topic 1: Setting A New Speed Record

Much, much faster than a speeding bullet, NASA's X-43A scramjet has set a
new speed record, reaching almost 10 times the speed of sound!

K-4
Lesson 1 - What Makes It Work?: To identify the parts and functions of a jet
engine.

Lesson 2 - Move It!: To learn how an airplane, rocket, or shuttle moves
forward.

5-8
Lesson 1 - Lifting Payloads Into Space: Students construct a rocket out of a
balloon and use it to carry a paper clip payload.

Lesson 2 - Wind Tunnel: To build a simple wind tunnel and use it to test
paper airplanes, demonstrating on a small scale how scientists test an
aircraft's flight characteristics.

9-12
Lesson 1 - Your Personal X-Plane: To design an X-Plane and a mission for it
to accomplish.

Lesson 2 - Scaling The X-37 Down: To compute the sizes of the scale models
of the X-37.

Topic 2: What Goes Up...Doesn't Always Come Down

In nearly 50 years, many, many objects have been launched into space. Some
have returned to Earth, some have traveled out into the solar system, and
some have burned up in the atmosphere. Others, though, are still orbiting
the Earth, including thousands of pieces of space debris.

K-4
Lesson 1 - How Much Junk Is In Space?: To use estimation to find the correct
number of items on a grid.

Lesson 2 - Flying Debris: To observe the effects of an item's impact on
another item.

5-8
Lesson 1 - Look Out For Space Debris!: To simulate impacts of space debris
into various materials.

Lesson 2 - All Sorts Of Debris: To learn about the space debris problem, and
to sort different types of debris into size categories.

9-12
Lesson 1 - Searching For Satellites: To locate different types of satellites
and determine what purpose they serve.

Lesson 2 - Keeping Track Of All The Pieces: To use Kepler's and Newton's
Laws to determine the trajectory of pieces that have fallen off a launched
vehicle.
