This week on NASAexplores we're featuring articles from NASA's Exploration
Systems and Science Mission Directorates. Learn about how NASA communicates
with its deep space probes in "Calling All Spacecraft!" You have probably
heard about Cassini, now find out more in "Flying Rings Around Saturn."
Below are abstracts of the articles, as well as brief descriptions of the
accompanying lessons for each grade level.

Now is the time of year for the Geminid Meteor Shower. The best time to
look is Monday night, December 13th. Sky watchers who stay outside for a
few hours around midnight can expect to see dozens to hundreds of "shooting
stars." For more information, check out this informative feature:
http://www.nasa.gov/vision/universe/watchtheskies/06dec_geminids.html.

To access the articles and lessons, please visit the NASAexplores web site.

Topic 1: Calling All Spacecraft!

Talk about long-distance calling! NASA's Deep Space Network keeps in touch
with spacecraft traveling to other worlds, and beyond the solar system.

K-4
Lesson 1 - Deep Space Antennas: To complete a puzzle by connecting dots in
numerical order.

Lesson 2 - Now Hear This!: To simulate how antennas gather radio signals.

5-8
Lesson 1 - No Remote Control?: To demonstrate that radio waves cannot pass
through certain materials.

Lesson 2 - Station To Station: To study longitude through a mapping activity
of the three Deep Space Network (DSN) stations around the world.

9-12
Lesson 1 - Traveling Light: To determine the time it takes radio waves to
travel from Earth to the other planets in the solar system.

Lesson 2 - Make Your Own Deep Space Network: To construct a paper model of a
Deep Space Network (DSN) tracking station.

Topic 2: Flying Rings Around Saturn

Part of an international mission to study Saturn, the Cassini spacecraft has
already made new discoveries about the ringed planet, and its mission is
just beginning!

K-4
Lesson 1 - It's The Flattest Planet: To learn about the planet Saturn, and
to create a model of the planet.

Lesson 2 - The Floating Planet: To explore the concept of density.

5-8
Lesson 1 - Cassini Is A Robot: To examine students' ideas of what a robot
is, and to learn about the capabilities of the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft.

Lesson 2 - Make A Model Of Saturn: To learn about the Cassini spacecraft,
and to build a model of Saturn.

9-12
Lesson 1 - Saturn's Got Rings: To construct a scale model of the complex
ring system of Saturn.

Lesson 2 - The Human Side Of Cassini: To compare and contrast the Cassini
spacecraft to humans.
