Go to https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/language-tools/ and
download the British English dictionary to your desktop. Then open
Thunderbird and select Tools >> Add-ons >> Extensions. Here you will find a
small drop-down list (upper right, beside the "Search all add-ons" box) -
click on the drop-down arrow, select "Install Add-on from File .." and
navigate to the dictionary file which you downloaded. Once installation is
complete you will have to restart Thunderbird.

The new dictionary is now installed, but not yet active. Start a new e-mail
(or reply to this one of mine), and go to Options >> Check spelling. At the
bottom left of this dialog box you should find a drop down list of languages
installed, where you can now choose en_GB.

Re lower case use of en - TBH I'm surprised that the master race doesn't put
this after "US" ;-)

Good luck.
