Yeah,  I know what you're getting at but the fact remains that there are 
entire classes of people who will never need and never use word and be happy 
not doing it.  Star office is free and or cheap so maybe he should get that 
instead.  the point is that he can get what he needs without word.

It's not so much reading, that *usually* converts ok, but often a lot of
the structures used to produce a complex document, it's structure and
it's formatting, are lost in the conversion; this means that the person
with only Wordpad cannot then work on a Word document that's been given
them, and return it to the originator with the needed changes.

They also cannot make use of a Word form, which is a document structured
in such a way as to be easy to fill out; however, you must use Word to
do this, you can't use anything else, including Wordpad.
