Hi:
I am using word 2002 so I don't know if it is different in 2003, but try going
to the view menu and unchecking Markup . For some reason if Markup is checked
I get this effect as well.

edit a very long document I wrote and having problems with spell check. When I
try and hit f7 it will find a few errors and stop. Hitting the combo again will
find more but the changes I select will not stick.
