Just to chime in and say that's my feeling about the two kinds of menus, as
well. The more automated something like this becomes, and the more
supposedly user friendly it gets by presenting as little as possible so that
a user can avoid going through any steps to arrive at a destination, the
more disoriented I become. the design of the newer style start menu seems
to be predicated on this idea of treating the user like a baby so you can
get into rooms in your computer's house without having to walk down the
connecting hallways and actually know where the doors are. I'll bet these
developments contribute to making more and more users computer illiterate
and more easily befuddled than ever before. The one time I switched to the
newer menu system and explored it, I was really grateful that I was able to
guess that I might find the start menu options listed in its version of the
Control Center, so I could switch back.
